Ability FTP Server is an advanced, secure and easy-to-use FTP server program. It offers important security features, like 256-bit SSL encryption for secure connections, creation of users and groups with respective passwords, blocking of executable file uploads, IP black list, real-time activity and log viewers, hidden files and folder, virtual folders, access rights, and idle prevention.
It supports PASV mode for cases in which the client is behind a firewall, and FXP (site to site transfer), but this feature is disabled by default for security reasons.
After installation, you need to add at least one user with its public directory before the server starts running. It is also recommended to navigate through the settings tab to enable or disable the options that best suit your needs. It would have been nice if the program integrated a wizard to make the configuration a bit more user-friendly.
One security issue found is that the program doesn't install with the Anti-Hammer option selected by default. This feature blocks repeated attempts for connection with wrong users and/or passwords. If the administrator fails to enable it by omission, this is an open door for brute-force attacks, with the risks it implies.
Because of the ability of the program to specify users and user groups with its respective passwords, read and write rights, disk quotas, and more permissions, this is a perfect choice for enterprises.
Ability FTP Server is available as a shareware version fully functional for 30 days. It supports Windows 98, 2000, XP, 2003, Vista, 2008, and 7
